This "Voltron" stealth bomber seems out of a science fiction movie, but it's one of the aircraft concepts that military powerhouse BAE Systems is working on: A single bomber/drone would fly as one from the home base, then divide into three airplanes to execute different tasks in the same area and reassemble to return to the base.

Cloud storage startup Box announced that it snagged another huge customer on Wednesday. Toyota is choosing Box for its entire North America business units.

Box didn't comment on how big this deal was financially, merely saying that it covered thousands of employees. But this is Box's first major corporate deal since raising $150 million at a $2.4 billion valuation earlier this week.

By using Box, Toyota employees will be able to access and share content across any device, Box says.

Today's deal shows Box is snagging big corporate contracts. Just two months ago, Box announced a similar deal with General Electronics, which CEO Aaron Levie called a "tipping point" for the company. The GE deal will help it land more big customers, and encourage more developers to write apps for the Box platform, Levie told Forbes' Alex Konrad.

Box already claimed some big customers like eBay, Proctor & Gamble, and Schneider Electric. The company has 39,000 corporate clients in total and 27 million individual users, it says.

All of that could help the company encourage investors to bite when it goes public, which it will do soon. Box filed its pre-IPO paperwork in March, but hasn't pulled the trigger yet. Sources say it delayed its IPO, blaming a cooling market for cloud software companies. The company is still reportedly going to go public this year.

Investors may still have doubts about Box's finances, because the company is burning through its cash at a high rate, which some estimate to be twice as large as its competitors'. But it's spending its money mostly on sales and marketing, and deals like this one seem to prove that this choice is paying off.

In fact, Box's sales rose 94% last quarter to $45.3 million, compared to $23.4 million from the same quarter of last year. It reported a $38.5 million loss for that quarter.

The numbers being forecast for the Internet of Things (IoT) are mind-boggling.

In the consumer space, many products and services have already crossed over into the IoT, including kitchen and home appliances, lighting and heating products, and insurance company-issued car monitoring devices that allow motorists to pay insurance only for the amount of driving they do.

In the report, we also find that there's a huge amount of innovation happening in the business-to-business IOT space right now.

Here's a look at some of the most important enterprise applications that are already being developed:

  • Connected advertising and marketing. Cisco believes that this category (think Internet-connected billboards) will be one of the top three IoT categories, along with smart factories, and telecommuting support systems.
  • Intelligent traffic management systems. Machina research, in a paper prepared for the GSM Association, sees $100 billion in revenue by 2020 for applications such as toll-taking and congestion penalties. A related revenue source will be smart parking-space management, expected to drive $30 billion in revenue.
  • Waste management systems. In Cincinnati, residential waste volume fell 17% and recycling volume grew by 49% through use of a “pay as you throw” program that used IoT technology to monitor those who exceed waste limits.
  • Smart electricity grids that adjust rates for peak energy usage. These will represent savings of $200 billion to $500 billion per year by 2025, according to the McKinsey Global Institute.
  • Smart water systems and meters. The cities of Doha, São Paulo, and Beijing have reduced leaks by 40 to 50% by putting sensors on pumps and other water infrastructure.
  • Industrial uses including Internet-managed assembly lines, connected factories, and warehouses, etc.

Much has been written about the distractibility of the modern American. In the past decade, diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorders have skyrocketed, the listicle conquered the internet, and there was even a report that goldfish now have longer attention spans than the average American.

Now it appears that watching television, itself a diversion, requires more focus than we can muster.

Forbes reports that a new study from the consulting group TNS found that 56% of Americans engage in another digital activity (playing with their phones, tablets, or laptops) while they are watching TV. That puts the U.S. ahead of the global average, which is 48%, but well behind Japan, where 79% of TV viewers are using a different device while they do it.

The news will come as a boon to social media platforms, especially Twitter, which have worked to sell advertisers on the idea that they can more effectively reach consumers who are watching a given TV show by also hitting them with a message on social media.

Despite the fragmented attention spans, television is still claiming big viewership worldwide. The TNS study found that some 88% of the world's internet users watch television on a weekly basis.
