Angela Ahrendts

Apple has finally filled a key hole in its executive team, hiring Burberry CEO, Angela Ahrendts, to run its retail stores and online site.

This is a critical hire for Apple: The company's retail stores are a major competitive advantage, and since ousting its prior retail chief last October, Apple has been searching for the right person to run the business for almost a year.

Few fashion-challenged tech aficionados (myself included) had heard of Ahrendts before this morning, but she's a big star in the luxury world.

Born and raised in a small town in Indiana, Ahrendts ascended through the ranks of Warnaco, Liz Claiborne, Donna Karan, and other fashion companies before taking the helm at Burberry in 2006. In her 7 years at the British fashion firm, she has transformed the company's products and business and delivered excellent returns for shareholders. Ahrendts is said to be a workaholic with both an excellent fashion and design sense and analytical business skills, and according to this 2010 Wall Street Journal profile, the people who know her and work with her have great respect for her.

One question that arose after the news broke was why Ahrendts would go from -- For more information read the original article here.

This is simple but brilliant: Perma CC is a new service that allows authors to create web links that never lead to broken, dead, changed, or missing web pages ever again.

Here's how it works:

When a user creates a Perma.cc link, Perma.cc archives a copy of the referenced content, and generates a link to an unalterable hosted instance of the site. Regardless of what may happen to the original source, if the link is later published by a journal using the Perma.cc service, the archived version will always be available through the Perma.cc link.

Perma CC is currently focusing on academic publishing: While dead links are frustrating for the average user, they're a huge issue for legal and academic journals.

Authors use links to cite influential work a lot, but web pages are often temporary, fleeting things. Half of all the U.S. Supreme Court's citations of web links lead to dead ends, according to the New York Times.

A study cited in The Times Higher Education supplement says 98.3 per cent of all web pages are changed in some way within six months.

First Blood-Filled Mosquito Fossil Makes Jurassic Park Feel More Real

A team of scientists just made an exciting and very pop culture-friendly discovery in Montana: The first ever fossilized mosquito with a belly full of blood. This little guy's been hanging out underground for 46 million years, and it's a small miracle that it hung in there so long.

Anasomnia

Let's kick this off with something pretty freaky. This incorporates your webcam into play, which makes it slightly more terrifying. Don't let the thumbnail fool you, it gets about as fucked up as my parents' marriage. http://anasomnia.com/ Trippiness: 8/10

Zoom Quilt

Approximately 88 different photos all blend into one, in this seemingly endless website. This leaves you in a state similar to my uncle at a preschool playground: staring, drooling, and moaning. http://zoomquilt2.madmindworx.com/zoomquilt2.swf Trippiness: 7/10

Boohbah Zone

So apparently, this is a TV show on PBS. The same network that airs Bob Ross, and Caillou, a show about a little kid with cancer. So basically, everyone at PBS is on shrooms. And so are 50% of the people who went on these sites, so that's ok. http://www.boohbah.tv/zone.html Trippiness: 5/10

Creepy Girl

Fucking Asians. I don't know why this was made, but it should be gone forever. Prepare for nightmares. http://www.cubo.cc/creepygirl/ Trippiness: 3/10

No, this has nothing to do with the movie. Although, it's equally as entertaining, if not more. There is no possible way to explore all this site has to offer, the links are -- For more information read the original article here.
Google just barely dodged a bullet. The NASA team booted up their D-Wave Two just days before the federal government shutdown would have put a complete stop to the project. But with NASA and Ames almost completely shut down, it's not exactly clear what's happening with the machine.

GM has announced that Siri's Eyes-Free will be coming to the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, Volt, Malibu, SS, Cruze and Equinox. The Eyes-Free feature allows Siri to be activated with a button mounted in the steering wheel, making it easier and safer for drivers to interact with Apple's digital assistant while on the road. In a press released GM said:

"The response to Siri Eyes Free integration in Chevy Sonic and Spark from our customers has been remarkable. Easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink's existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience, so we're excited to expand this to even more customers."

GM is by no means the first or only car manufacturer to support Siri Eyes Free. Just check out all the cars expected to offer it next year here. With Eyes Free, Apple says users will be able to call people, hear and compose text messages, use Maps and get directions, select and play music, read notifications, add reminders, find calendar information, and more.
